ETS is Online: Accredited Micro-Credentials Now Available

Since December 1, 2025, ETS has been offering accredited online courses as micro-credentials—built for academic credibility, transparent workload (ECTS), and practical ministry application.

The European Theological Seminary (ETS) launched its first online courses on December 1, 2025. With decades of experience in theological education, this step expands ETS’ delivery format—without compromising academic standards, assessment integrity, or quality assurance.

Why “Accredited” Matters in Online Theology

Choosing an online provider is not only about content quality; it is about recognition, transparency, and trust. In Europe, quality assurance is commonly framed by the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG). ECTE positions its micro-credential provider accreditation within this ESG framework.

ECTE formally offers a distinct accreditation activity for Micro-Credential Provider (MCP) accreditation, with the aim of ensuring that micro-credentials are delivered within a structured, quality-assured institutional system—not as isolated “one-off” courses.

What Are Micro-Credentials?

In practical terms, micro-credentials are short, focused learning units. At EU level, a micro-credential is commonly described as a record of learning outcomes achieved through a small volume of learning—designed to be transparent and portable.

  • Outcome-driven: Each micro-credential is built around clearly defined learning outcomes (what you will know, understand, and be able to do).
  • Workload-transparent: Workload is expressed through the ECTS system (1 ECTS=30 h workload), enabling realistic planning and comparability across learning contexts.
  • Quality-assured: Assessment methods, student support, and academic oversight sit within an institutional QA system aligned with ESG expectations.

Design & Documentation Standards

ECTE provides a structured approach for micro-credential design and documentation, including a Micro-Credential Design Template and a Micro-Credential Certificate Template. This strengthens transparency for learners and stakeholders—especially where micro-credentials are combined or presented for recognition.

How ETS Implements This in ETS Online

ETS Online micro-credentials are designed to combine academic theological study with real ministry application. Each course is planned with clear learning outcomes, appropriate assessment, and an ECTS-based workload model, anchored in a seminary-level quality framework (EQF-level 6).

External Quality Assurance & Trust Signals

ECTE describes its external quality assurance for micro-credentials in relation to ESG-aligned internal QA expectations and external review procedures. For learners, that translates into a more robust environment: clear documentation, consistent assessment, and institutional accountability.

A Bridge Between Church and School

Micro-credentials are an effective format for continuing theological education: they allow focused upskilling, support structured learning pathways, and keep academic theology accessible for those serving in church, ministry leadership, counseling contexts, or personal vocational development—while staying anchored in formal quality assurance.
